Controversy as Swifts bow out of Marshall Cup

Rathfriland’s second string made the short trip to Lurgan on Saturday past for their first competitive game of the season in the Marshall cup.

The game started with Rathfriland pressing their opponents into their own half. however the hosts were well organised and frustrated the Rathfriland attack.

Rathfriland did have the ball in the net when Mark Toner found space and fired in but was adjuged to have handled. Full time came and extra time commenced and on the stroke of half time the referee awarded a penalty claiming that Johnston had handled in the area. The home striker buried the penalty high into the roof of the net to finally break the deadlock.

The second half was all Rathfriland as they tried in vain to get an equaliser.

Rathfriland never got going in this game but certainly did not deserve to lose.
