Donacloney win over high flying Aghalee side

With their last game having been a 4-0 win over Union Lusa in Division Three, Donacloney were keen to pick up another three points on Saturday past but faced a tough task away to second placed Aghalee Village who had been in good form.

The ‘Cloney started the game playing against the wind and had to dig in as Aghalee had a period of good early pressure.

A combination of the crossbar and excellent keeping by Derek Curran kept the sides on level terms. Kane Croft spurned a good chance to put Donacloney ahead but couldn’t wrap his foot around the ball as it dropped in the box.

Donacloney took the lead after the Aghalee goalkeeper dropped a routine cross into the path of Steven Leckey who made no mistake.

Chris Clague replaced Kiefer O’Boyle shortly before half-time due to injury.

Chris Shields doubled the lead in the second half as he latched onto a clearance from Curran and expertly lobbed the Aghalee goalkeeper.

Shields has now scored in the past four consecutive games.

Davy Sterritt came on to replace Gary Knox in the holding midfielder role.

With Donacloney now 2-0 up, Aghalee’s discipline fell away and had a player was sent off.

The numbers were evened up five minutes from time as Clague was shown the red card.

Aghalee pulled a goal back in the dying minutes as their centre forward headed in at the back post.

This was an important win for Donacloney with Aghalee sitting in second place in Division 3.

Donacloney Firsts are away to Goodyear in the league this weekend with the Reserves back in action at home to Tullyvallen after a free week last Saturday.
