Moneyslane FC entertained Intermediate A Tandragee Roversin a festive friendly at Rathfriland High School.
Johnny Kernaghan, Gregg Harrison and Jonny Gibson were all rested but the rest of the 1st team squad all played a part in the game.
In a competitive encounter it was the home team that had the better of the first half. Gareth Rees was causing all sorts of problems down the right flank and the young attacker had two opportunities in the opening minutes.
Mark Ervine then saw a great shot from 18 yards come back off a post. ‘Slane took the lead when Brian Quilty crossed for Gareth Rees to side foot home from 5 yards out.
Stevie Coulter then broke through 1 v 1 but somehow from 8 yards out the keeper blocked the shot. Tandragee then forced Stevie White into a good double save.
Gareth Rees then broke through on two occasions but on the first his shot was saved and on the second he cut the ball back for Brian Quilty who fired just wide.
Just on half time Tandragee equalised when the striker fired home into the corner from the edge of the box.
The second was more of an even affair with plenty of endeavour and both sides creating chances. Tandragee took the lead when a Tandragee player went over and the ref awarded a penalty that was converted.
‘Slane hit back but failed to convert a number of chances. Then a sucker goal when on good movement and a passing opened up the home defence and the ball was dispatched into the net.
Back came ‘Slane and again they created a number of chances and eventually pulled a goal back when a Brian Quilty shot beat the keeper at the near post via a deflection.
At the death ‘Slane almost equalised when a Brian Quilty corner was met by Stevie Coulter but his header cannoned off the cross bar.
Moneyslane manager David Johnstone was ‘pleased’ with his team’s recent performances.
“I am really pleased with the two friendlies we had this week,” he commented.
“Both were competitive and the players put a lot into both games,” the boss said.
“Tandragee Rovers FC are one of the top Mid Ulster sides and we played very well against them.
“In truth had we taken our chances we would have won.
“The most important thing was getting some fitness and game time and that we achieved,” he added.
“We are back in league action this Saturday v Oxford Sunnyside FC and we are aiming to kick off the new year where we left off last year and hope that 2016 will be a successful year for the club.”
HAPPY NEW YEAR
The Moneyslane family would like to wish all our members and sponsors a Happy New Year 2016.

The Intermediate Cup is a prestigious IFA Cup competition with an amazing history starting way back in 1892 -93, Saturday’s opposition Glentoran FC Reserves in fact won the Intermediate Cup the following season 1893-94.
