Kennedy nets crucial late winner for Bann Threes

With only a few fixtures left, Banbridge Thirds claimed a vital 3-2 win over Cookstown Thirds at Havelock to help their survival cause.

Midway through the first-half, Banbridge attacked down the left side with Hurst finding Scott, who played a great through ball to Sneddon coming off the right flank. He picked it up just outside the circle and skilfully rounded the keeper to give Bann the lead.

From Bann’s second short corner, they extended their lead when Anderson found Scott on a variation and he made no mistake.

Anderson should have scored from the next short too, after the ball broke kindly to him as his initial shot was blocked but his shot flew narrowly wide.

Cookstown soon got back into the game when a quick free was taken in the Bann 25 and the ball was worked well into the circle where a Cookstown forward slapped in.

In the second half, Cookstown’s pressure told when a Cookstown player waltzed past two Bann players and found a forward at the back post to tap in from two yards.

The goal spurred Bann into life and after an initial shot from Scott was saved, Kennedy scored on his reverse.

Cookstown continued to press forward and with only few minutes left, managed to equalise when a crash ball in from the right was excellently deflected past Mooney in the Bann goal.

However, with one of the last attacks, Bann got the winner when another crash ball into the circle was deflected in by Kennedy.

Bann now entertain Bangor Thirds at Havelock at 7.30pm tonight (Tuesday).
