Banbridge Town upset the odds in their League Cup opener on Tuesday night.

The Championships Two side ousted Championship One Armagh City out of the competition with a superb 3-1 victory at Crystal Park.

The win arrived thanks to a Ryan Moffatt penalty and a Matty McCartan double and sets up a possible tie against Premiership opposition on Tuesday 1st September.

Ryan Watson’s side had their fair share of chances during an entertaining first period but had to wait until the second half to get the break-through.

That finally arrived on 53 minutes after Chris McGrath, returning from suspension, was brought down in the area and Ryan ‘Pixie’ Moffatt converted the penalty.

The visitors weren’t about to let Town win it that easily and levelled the scores.

Cue Matty McCartan. He made the game his own, rifling in Town’s second from the edge of the area after the in-form Conor Downey made a great run and cut the ball back.

McCartan added his second and his side’s third to cap off the victory and there was even time left for Downey to strike the crossbar as Town supporters went home happy.

Now their side will be looking to carry that momentum into Saturday’s league game against Tobermore at Crystal Park.
