Pip pips Swifts with wonder strike

PHILIP ‘Pip’ Gordon was the hero for Dromore Amateurs Seconds on Saturday after his wonder strike 12 minutes from time gave his side a 2-1 league victory over Suffolk Swifts.

Playing down the left flank as part of a three-pronged attack, Gordon came racing into the Suffolk penalty area to get on the end of a pinpoint cross from Aaron Noble - and the Dromore man caught the ball sweetly on the volley, firing an unstoppable rocket into the corner of the net.

It was a goal worthy of winning any match, at any venue, and Gordon was warmly congratulated by his team-mates afterwards.

Gordon’s screamer gave his side a 2-1 lead which they comfortably maintained until the final whistle - making it two wins over Suffolk Swifts in three weeks for the Amateurs, who are sponsored by McDonald’s Mace.

Saturday’s victory at the Community Centre was probably Dromore’s best footballing performance of the season - although they were pushed every step of the way by a plucky Suffolk side.

After a scoreless first half, the Amateurs found themselves trailing 1-0 on 65 minutes when slack marking at a corner allowed the visitors to take the lead.

But Dromore had been playing some impressive football, moving the ball out from defence through the midfield and creating goalscoring chances at will - so the equaliser, when it came, was fully deserved.

Gordon fizzed over a cross from the left and Colin Harper finished neatly at the back post from close range - his fifth goal of the season.

After that, Dromore always looked the more likely team to go on and win the match, and Gordon’s late strike was the gloss finish on a superb team performance from everyone in an Amateurs shirt.

Team: D Welshman, R McMurray, R Ward, G Hill, W McMurray, D McDowell, P Smith, C Harper, P Gordon, A Noble, N Walsh. Subs: D McCauley, A McCartan.

This Saturday, the seconds play host to league title contenders Ardoyne WMC at Ferris Park.
