The forward netted four goals after, according to his boss, turning down a strong pursuit from a more senior club.

“While there many good performances on Saturday, I think Gregg deserves a special mention,” said Johnstone.

“Despite being chased aggressively by a Championship club this last week, Gregg turned them down and committed to Moneylane and I know I speak on behalf of everyone at the club in commending Gregg for his loyalty. Gregg’s four goals on Saturday show just what an important player he is for us.”

Johnstone could never have been anything only delighted on Saturday.

Having watched his side dismantle Laurelvale 9-2, he praised his side’s clinical edge in front of goal.

“What a great start to the season that was,” he said. “The players made a big statement today and produced a dominant display. Darragh (Peden) and I had been emphasising before the game the need to be ruthless and take chances when on top and the players responded with a resounding victory.”

Next up for Slane is a home game against Windmill Stars tonight (Tuesday -kick-off 6.45pm).
