Village Thirds get one over Stranford
DROMARA Village returned to winning ways when they entertained a big and physical Strangford side at Bellsbridge on Saturday.
Dromara started on the front foot and immediately put the Strangford defence under pressure. A series of good deliveries by Hughes and McIroy form corners was testing the Strangford keeper but him and his defence were up to the task.
This was to become the story of the first half as Dromara, despite enjoying a lot of possession, failed to create any real clear cut chances with all too often the final ball letting them down along with some poor finishing.
The second half saw Strangford come out the stronger and a couple of times early on they got in behind the Dromara defence but they never really tested O’Gormley in the Dromara goals. Manager Wright was trying to get his full backs Rowan and Belshaw higher up the pitch and this saw them start to link up well with Hughes and McIlroy on the wings. Midway through the second half Dromara went in front when good play by Belshaw saw his cross fall to the feet of young Gavin McIlroy and he had the easy task of side footing into the net.
Five minutes later it was 2-0. Good play by Hughes saw his ball cause havoc in the box and William Hill, who had replaced the hardworking Adam McDonald up front was able to poke the ball home.
The Dromara defence of Rowan, Doyle, Bingham and Belshaw were having a sound afternoon and they were well protected by Hughes and Mitchell in the Dromara midfield.
With ten minutes to go, Dromara got their third and final goal of the afternoon. Bingham started the move at the back and he played the ball out left to Kyle Hamilton who had replace the injured Belshaw. He played the ball to Danny Hughes, who proceeded to beat his marker. He whipped in a superb cross and the in rushing Mitchell out jumped his marker and his brilliant header found the bottom corner of the net.
There was no more goalmouth action after this and Dromara were able to see the game out to collect a valuable three points. Dromara had a number of impressive performers with Gareth Rowan superb at the back and Hughes and McIroy causing plenty of problems out on the wings.
