YCOB power past the Dons in friendly with a Rooney double

Banbridge YCOB took on Mid-Ulster League side The Dons on Saturday afternoon, winning 4-2 in a friendly that was designed to keep both of the sides active before they faced their final league games of the season.

The first 15 minutes were evenly matched while both sides were determined to gain the upper hand on the game.

Bann grasped control and after several missed chances, Mark Rooney was the man to put the hosts ahead, converting a cut-back after good work from Paul Murphy.

The Dons, however, equalised soon after. They won possession on the right wing and punished some slack marking to find a route through to goal and convert the chance.

Just before the break, Bann regained the lead through a Cathal Crossan shot after a fine run carved open the defence.

The visitors came out fighting and equalised for a second time after three opportunities to clear were spurned by YCOB. The Dons attacking midfielder seized on the loose ball and buried it into the net.

It was the away side’s last attack of note with Bann pressing continuously for the rest of the game and powering on to victory.

Ryan McDowell scored with a fine strike from the edge of the box. Not to be out-done, Rooney grabbed his second with a 20-yard screamer to leave the final score at 4-2.

Best for Bann on the day was Paul Murphy.
