LADIES LOOK FOR PLAYERS

IT'S 7pm on a Monday night. At Dromore Leisure Centre a team of footballers take to the pitch for their weekly training session.

There's nothing unusual in that, except you'll not see players training to be the next Healy, Rooney or Beckham. Rather they want to be the next Kelly Smith, Katie Chapman or Kristine Lilley.

Dromore Amateurs Ladies FC are one of the few ladies teams in the district and compete in the National League of the Northern Ireland Women's Football Association - the second division of football in women's football.

"The side has been been fairly successful recently, winning the Mid Ulster Cup and finishing second in the league a few seasons ago," team coach Mark Rimmington said.

"We're in pre-season training now for the start of the 2008 season, which runs from April right through until September with matches played on Wednesday nights.

"It offers a fantastic opportunity for younger players to represent Northern Ireland and take part in one of the fastest growing sports in the UK."

The side are currently looking to strengthen their squad and want to encourage local girls to get involved in the team.

"The club has members aged between 14 and 40 coming from areas such as Lisburn, Belfast, Banbridge, Newry and Rathfriland," Mark added.

"Anyone who comes along will be trained by IFA qualified coaches. All we ask is that they are over 14 years of age as there is a lower age limit to compete in the league.

"Players of all abilities are welcome to come along and give it a try."

Training is now taking place at Dromore Leisure Centre from 7-8pm on the astroturf tennis courts. This will move to the grass pitches when the lighter nights come in.

Any girls interested in turning out for Dromore Amateurs Ladies should contact the team's manager, Roger McCartan, on 07849318625 or email markrimmington@hotmail.co.uk

The club would also welcome anyone who is interesting in sponsoring the team. Interest parties should contact Roger or Mark at the contacts given above.
