Five archers from Ballyvally Archery Club will be off to the World Championships next month.

They have recently been selected to shoot in the World Field Archery Championships in September. There is a long tradition going back 20 years of the local club doing well in providing archers to shoot at World and European level, starting with Peter Mulligan in 1996.

Peter won two gold medals at the World Championships in Austria and Croatia and a silver at the European Champs in Slovenia. Following in his footsteps this year will be Ballyvally archers Mark Nesbitt, Robert Mallon, Dean Hamilton, Jake Walsh and Craig McCreery.

All five have been selected before and are becoming established members of Team GB.

Meanwhile, Jake Walsh, who shoots compound unlimited, has just returned from the European Junior Target Championships in Romania where he won a silver medal.

It is expected that a separate group of five archers from Ballyvally will be selected to shoot for Archery Ireland as well.

That will make it a total of 10 Ballyvally archers shooting internationally this year.

BALLYVALLY JUNIOR SQUAD

Ballyvally AC ae currently selecting their new junior squad for 2016-2017.

This will be chosen from all those juniors who put in scores from tournaments so far this year, especially the 50 juniors who shot in the British Open in June at Greenmount.

That tournament was hosted by Ballyvally Club for the fifth time and should help to take the Ballyvally junior squad for 2017 up to approximately 60 members.

The first training trip for many members of the squad will be to Wrexham in September and the first big training meeting will be held in Banbridge Leisure Centre from 21st to 25th October 2016.
