Newry prove too strong for Seconds

BANBRIDGE Seconds met Newry Seconds in the third round of the B2 league.

The game started at a very fast pace causing a lot of forced errors and interceptions by both teams. Newry’s defence started strong making it hard for the attacking players to pass into the shooting circle,

At the end of the first quarter Bann trailed by three goals.

The team appeared to start the second quarter more focussed with super defence work by GD Elaine Henry and GK Christine Cartmill.

The strong Newry defensive duo in Bann’s shooting circle also proved challenging, forcing errors by Bann’s GS Cara Malcolmson and GA Mona Lewis.

Newry took full advantage of Bann’s errors and extended their lead by six goals at the end of the quarter. Bann 8 – 14 Newry

Leanne Burns took the court as WA and put good pressure on Newry’s attacking play. Newry also made changes and reshuffled their players ensuring a lot of pressure on the Bann side.

C Claire McCullough, WA Leanne Burns and GA Lisa Docherty worked hard around their shooting circle feeding lovely balls into GS Cara Malcolmson. Bann defence trio worked tirelessly and forced Newry to make mistakes.

Bann worked the ball down the court and were able to convert. Bann won the quarter by three goals but Newry still led the game by three. Bann 16 – 19 Newry.

Ingrid Orr took the court as WD in the last quarter and instantly forced errors by her Newry player. Newry also worked hard and applied pressure on Bann’s centre passes. With a taller shooter now in the Newry circle Bann found it hard to defend long lobs into her, with accurate shooting Bann began to trail again. Bann fought hard to the end but the Newry side proved too strong on this occasion, winning by five goals.
