RETAINING MINOR PLATE STILL IN REACH

Newry Ladies II 1 Dromore Ladies III 4

HALFWAY House Dromore Ladies Thirds, sponsored by Grahams Newsagents, travelled to face Newry seconds in the third round of the Minor Plate.

Dromore, the current Plate holders, were determined to put up a good fight and proceed into the quarter finals of this year's competition.

Newry had plans of their own and opened the scoring from a penalty corner strike from the edge of the circle, evading both keeper and defender on the left post.

Dromore struggled to adapt to the gravel pitch and gradually gained some territory through Ruth Raveys grit; Shannon Brush scoring the away sides equaliser with a wonderful reverse stick strike from the edge of the circle.

Half time came and with some harsh words and a re-affirmation of tactics Dromore took the second half a much better side.

Veronica Cummins nosed the Blues in front, latching onto a great Hanna Palmer through ball.

Newry fought back with Rosie Maitland remaining solid in centre back and assisted by her fellow defenders. Louise McClurg soon had to make way for a blood injury, Cheryl Jenkins admirably deputising at left back in her absence.

Dromore's third goal brought further daylight between the teams, Lauren Pedlow and Nicole Laverty finding the angle to square for Anna Clarke to slot home.

With the game becoming stretched Nicola Gribbon was replaced by Rachel Stanley at sweeper due to a head injury, showing great flexibility by the Thirds' squad.

Rachel Donaldson pulled off a great point blank save at her near post to frustrate and already highly frustrated Newry forward line.

The icing on the cake came when Rachel Morrow evaded two opposition players and laid off a great pass for another Veronica Cummins poachers goal making it 4-1 to Dromore.

Halfway House Dame of the Game was awarded jointly to captain Rosie Maitland for her solid performance at centre back and leadership as well as midfield creator Hanna Palmer who worked tirelessly in her personal battle with the Newry midfield.

Dromore now enter the quarter final stage in an attempt to keep their firm grip on the Minor Plate.
