Funding required for new school

Lagan Valley MLA Brenda Hale has vowed to continue to fight to ensure the funding for the new Dromore High School is secured and that the build proceeds as quickly as possible.

Speaking at the school’s recent Prize Night, Mrs Hale pledged her continued support for the building projects at both Dromore High School and Primary School.

She said that she had discussed the matter with the Education Minister and had urged him to release the funding as a matter of urgency.

“Since my election in 2011, I have sought to assist our local schools in the Dromore area, with both the Primary School and High School new build projects high on the agenda,” said Mrs Hale.

“Dromore High School new build has gained planning permission, the site has been purchased and I will continue to press the Education Minister to ensure Dromore High School is top of the list, when any future announcements are made regarding funding for capital projects in the South Eastern Region.

“I would commend the past Principal of Dromore High School, Mr John Wilkinson and the board of governors, for their vision and contribution towards the progress to date, in achieving the envisaged new build for the High School.

“I am already working with the new Principal Mr Ian McConaghy and his team, as we lobby the Department of Education and the Minister for the necessary funding, to ensure the new build proceeds and meets the immediate and future needs of the local community.

“The demand and growth of the Dromore High School population, coupled with the unsuitable layout of the existing premises, needs to be addressed soon.

“Funding to proceed with the new High school build is critical, so that the High school can continue to grow and develop. Aligned with this is the importance of ensuring the new building meets the needs and aspirations of the wider Dromore Community. We want a new High School suitable for educating pupils in the 21st Century.

“I have been in contact with the Minister of Education and urge him to release the necessary funding immediately to enable the build to commence.”

Lagan Valley MP Jeffrey Donaldson offered his continued support to Mrs Hale and the Dromore schools.

“Dromore High School continues to grow in its success and the pressing need for a new school building is evident,” he added.

“I will continue to work closely with the school and with Brenda to secure the capital funding from the Department of Education, to enable the building project to commence as soon as possible.”
