Council to look at community sports

Banbridge District Council is exploring the idea of developing a partnership with the Southern Education and Library Board to develop sporting facilities for the local community.

A recent meeting of the council’s Leisure and Development Committee heard that the current shortage of sports provision such as playing fields in the area, coupled with the very significant under-utilisation of school premises has been a major issue.

Banbridge Council has been one of the main pioneers in Northern Ireland in promoting the concept of community use of school premises with the partnership with the SELB that covers Ferris Park in Dromore and Rathfriland High School.

After the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure tasked Sports NI with preparing a capital grant programme to encourage schools and colleges to develop partnerships with local councils, Banbridge Council have agreed to put together a business plan to consider potential development options and investigate the merits of a collaborative approach which could involve local schools or clubs.
