A man in his mid-50s has died in a house fire in Armagh city.

Firefighters were called to the scene around 8.30 last night (Friday) in Culdee Drive.

Group commander Mark Smyth said it was a “very intense fire”.

“It is my understanding that there were some attempts from neighbours to deal with the fire before crews arrived,” he said.

Around 30 firefighters from Armagh, Portadown and Keady tackled the blaze in the terraced house.

Commander Smyth said investigations are ongoing to establish the cause of the fire.
