Police issue warning after open window attracts would-be thieves

Police are reminding the local community of some crime prevention advice following an attempted burglary that occurred at a house in the Downpatrick Street area of Rathfriland reported on the morning of Friday 28 August.

It is believed that someone attempted to enter an open window but failed.

Constable Alan McKinney said: “Some people are quite prepared to enter your house and steal what comes quickly to hand.

“To reduce the likelihood of this type of crime taking place, car keys, handbags and wallets should not be left where they can easily be seen or found, or within easy reach of an open window. Put them away properly in a safe place and if you have a burglar alarm set it. Make sure all windows and doors are locked at night or when your house is left unattended. Anyone with any information can contact police on the non emergency number 101. or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
