Tragedy has struck the family of an Ulster Unionist candidate in tomorrow’s election after his young grandson died during the night.

Doug Beattie, a councillor in Portadown, will be one of three UUP candidates on ballot papers in Upper Bann tomorrow.

But last night the former Royal Irish Regiment captain’s 15-month old grandson, Cameron Tindale, passed away in his sleep.

In a brief statement released through the party, Mr Beattie asked that his family “be given privacy at this time to grieve”.
