Banbridge man Andrew Burns was in the headlines on Boxing Day as he bagged a double to secure victory in a festive derby.
His twin brother Aaron had hoped there would be similar things written about him as he looked forward to Linfield’s big game against Glentoran.
However, when he failed a late fitness test and was ruled out of the biggest game in the country, his chances were gone.
Meanwhile, in County Tyrone, Andrew took centre stage, scoring twice for his team, Dungannon, against Ballinamallard.
The defender’s double gave the Swifts a 2-0 victory at Stangmore Park and moved them out of the Premiership drop zone.
Andrew told us: “It was a big win, not only taking us out of the bottom two, but also closing the gap on Ballinamallard above us.
“It sets us up nicely for a big push in the new year.
“Dungannon is a great club and has survived in the top division for a long time now so we’re all determined to keep it that way and avoid relegation.”
Andrew’s man of the match performance earned him a place on the Danske Bank Premiership ‘team of the week.’
The only problem the selectors for that team had was wondering where to put him.
Andrew explained: “I usually play right-back, but started the Boxing Day game at right-midfield and ended up at centre-back.
“Both my goals were headers from corners. It’s good to score, but ultimately getting the three points is all that really matters.”
It’s the latest in a series of impressive displays from Andrew which have meant he has secured his spot in the Dungannon starting XI.
Meanwhile, the other Burns twin could be on the move in 2015.
Aaron remains Linfield’s top scorer on 13 goals, even after missing the narrow 2-1 festive victory against the Glens.
The Ballygowan Road man has been watched by cross-channel scouts and there’s speculation an offer could be tabled during the January transfer window.
More good news for Aaron is that his recent injury isn’t as bad as first feared.
He’s been recovering from a badly-bruised toe and could return to action for the league leaders in their top-of-the-table clash at Crusaders on New Year’s Day.
