Gilford’s struggles continued as they crashed out of Round 2 of the Junior Cup following a 7-2 mauling at the hands of Ballymoney’s Riada at the Joey Dunlop Leisure Centre.

It had all started so promisingly for Gilford as they took the lead in the third minute.

Conor Magee broke into the box and the intercepting defender’s attempted clearance fell to Ruairi Gillen who struck the ball perfectly on the half volley to unleash an unstoppable shot.

The Riada equalised in the 15th minute before taking the lead nine minutes later.

Riada added a third as they caught Gilford on the break and then took the game by the scruff three minutes into the second half to add another soft goal to their tally.

Breaking into the Gilford half the attacking player spotted the keeper off of his line and took the opportunity to send the ball floating into the net.

Gilford threw themselves a lifeline within 3 minutes when their best move of the game provided a goal to match. James McDermott battled to win the ball on the right wing, he quickly pushed the ball forward for O’Hare to cross perfectly for the on-rushing Chris Magee to hit first time past the keeper.

With nothing to lose Gilford made three changes, switching to three at the back. This gave them more push upfront but could leave them exposed at the back. They proceeded to create numerous chances, all of which broke on the Riada defence.

This tactic did leave them exposed at the back and Riada were able to capitalise not once but three times before the end for a 7-2 victory.
