Dromore thrash Ballyclare to retain the High Schools’ Cup
Dromore High left the Danske Bank High School’s Cup final victorious last week, beating Ballyclare Secondary 41-0.
Dromore dominated possession in the opening minutes at Ravenhill, pinning Ballyclaire back to their own 22 yard line, but the stubborn Ballyclare defence held them up well by blocking tempting gaps in their backline.
Dromore broke the deadlock early on with a great build up of passing play which led to the ball being thrown out to left winger Aaron Atkinson who recognised his chance and found a gap in the defence resulting in the first try.
Atkinson’s midfield partner Ben Davis then broke through the Ballyclare defence to double the lead just five minutes later.
Ballyclare fought hard towards the end of the half, narrowly missing the chance to tie up the scores, conceding a penalty just yards away from Dromore’s try line.
As the whistle blew for the start of the second half, pressure grew on Ballyclare’s defensive line immediately.
Influential number 8 Ben Heath powered over from close range just after the break and his effort was converted by Ben Martin for a 17-0 lead. Heath added his second midway through the second half to extend the advantage.
Hooker Jonathan Scott squeezed for a try in the right corner and it was beautifully converted by Martin for a 31-0 lead, before replacement Bryan McCandless scored two late tries in a superb cameo appearance.
Martin converted one of McCandless’ scores to seal the 41-0 win.
