Mehaffey beaten in Irish Matchplay final

Scarva girl Olivia Mehaffey has missed out on winning her fourth major trophy of the season.

She was beaten six and five by Sarah Helly in the final of the Irish Women’s Close Matchplay tournament.

Victory would have added to her Irish Girls, Helen Holm Scottish Ladies and Welsh Ladies titles, won earlier in the season.

It has nonetheless been a sterling year for the 18 year-old, who has rocketed up to 59th in the ladies’ amateur world rankings.

She saw off Barbara Cooney (7&6), Sinead Sexton(1 up), Ciara Casey (5&4) and Laura Doherty (2&1) to secure her spot in the final at Rosapenna.
