Although they would not leave without a fight residents of Carnegie Street in Lurgan were resigned to losing their homes in 1977.

They had the support of local MP Harold McCusker but the general view was that a new ring road would go ahead.

Mr McCusker backed the residents. He said: “This is a stable community of elderly people who have dwelt in the area for most of their lives.” Pictured are Mr William Hamilton and the Carnegie Street pensioners.
