New boy Doyle sparkles for U16s against Coagh

DROMORE Trixter-sponsored under 16s played host to Tyrone side Coagh United’s U16s on a chilly Saturday morning at Dromore Leisure Centre with the two sitting side-by-side in the Mid Ulster Youth League table.

The previous encounter saw Dromore coming home with a 5-1 win under their belts but in recent weeks a slip in form along with a few players missing meant that Coagh were possibly slight favourites for a result.

Dromore though started brightly and took the lead within 10 minutes, a sharp through-ball seeing Ben Martin streaking through the visiting defence and slotting home from just inside the box with a good finish into the corner.

Coagh had some good possession in midfield but didn’t trouble stand-in keeper Neil Herron too much, their nippy centre forward being well marshalled by debutant Michael Doyle at the back.

The players were indulging in the beautiful game with some style, the ball being passed about on the ground as both teams probed the others defence.

As half time approached though, Dromore lost concentration a little resulting in a Coagh cross to the back post where three attackers lay in wait. Herron could do nothing as the ball was slotted home to make it 1-1 at half time.

The second half changed complexion a little, Coagh having more of the play as the locals struggled to raise the tempo. The Tyrone side started to take control of the midfield, and sure enough it was a central player who drove through the Dromore defence and struck home to give the visitors the lead.

Apart from this the Dromore defence were coping well, Keith McGuigan showing his usual resolve. A reshuffle saw Dromore get some momentum back in the middle of the pitch, and it was Bob Gibson playing in a midfield role that levelled the scores after a melee in the box resulted in him slamming home a loose ball.

With only five minutes or so remaining this left little time for either side to produce a winner, the score staying at a probably fair 2-2 at the whistle.

New boy Michael Doyle was Dromore’s man-of-the-match for a well disciplined marking performance.

Squad: Neil Herron, Stuart Wilson, William McCutcheon, Bob Gibson, Michael Doyle, Keith McGuigan, Connor Mallon, Scott Orr, Ben Martin, Aaron McConville, Ryan Cunningham, Andy Compton
